Multi-hyphen life as a conscious entrepreneur

Money can feel hard, abstract, like a strange dance. Since 2020 and learning from Leonie Dawson in their academy I’ve brought conscious attention to getting playful with income streams. Not just for me but for the creatives I mentor because that year invited a flip, reverse paradigm shift where everything felt possible and impossible at exactly the same time. If I’d not done this course, I wouldn’t have changed anything in my business. I would have kept on keeping on writing my £250 a day rate into funding bids and hoping at least one of three came off. It was a masterpiece of averages truly spanning 20 years but I NEVER felt secure. I felt much joy but never ever content or safe.

T-shirts and hope

I first came across teemill when my insta pal Sarah at Design by Kinship sent me t-shirts I’d ordered through them for Father’s Day.

I loved the teemill ethos straight away. Print on demand, organic cotton, fun colours and slogans to help you design up something bespoke for fun, for a cause, for your brand.

I started trying to make a shop a few months after but I had zero capacity so I abandoned it.

Fast forward a year or so later, Dave said to me in the aftermath of a particularly spectacular fall out with a neighbour;

“What’s that Mary Oliver poem you love?”

“Oh, Wild Geese?” I told him.

“Read it to me, the first line…?”

“You do not have to be good!”

“Put that on a t shirt…. “

So I did and I ordered it and I wear it to remind me that it’s not my job to convince people to like me or convince them that I’m kind. That’s what it’s really about for me after decades of people pleasing and a lightbulb moment with

Can you really make money selling t-shirts?

I tell you what I know, if you don’t turn on a few taps, you look at the same things and start furrowing your brow wondering why they are not working or worrying when someone might turn them off. Turn on multiple taps that don’t compete for your attention and you’ve got a business model that takes care of you. One where you can choose to ‘pay it forward’ in multiple ways without feeling like the life force is draining from you. More below the paywall on this…
