I adore facilitating workshops! Ideally I’d be in person with folks but online works too! I can’t apologise for my enthusiasm around goal setting - I’ve always just been geeky like that. I make new goals every year and check in with them once a quarter.
It’s become increasingly important to me as the years have gone on for various reasons.
In the last few years, I’ve found goal setting hugely anchoring in a sea of parenting and supporting a partner with chronic health conditions in a sector that is less than stable.
Last weekend I facilitated the third in a series of FREE workshops I called ‘Ways into Creative Journalling’. The workshops were to celebrate the launch of my new creativity and mindfulness journal.
You can find two of the recordings here and check out this post for the overview of the one in the middle I didn’t record because mum life didn’t quite allow space for that.
So to my SMART goal and I’ve nudged the acronym slightly to allow for more alignment with the way I work and my values.
The smart acronym when you’re trying to align with your environment and live a heart centred life could be;
Seasonal
Magical
Achievable
Realistic
Timely
I chose a goal that serves my passion for working in a way aligned with my energy and the seasons.
A goal that fuels the diversification of my income and allows me to practise my writing and continue to craft content that deepens my connection with folks across the world. I chose to set a goal around writing on substack! Perhaps you have one too?
Seasonal
I know I’ll have less screen time in summer so my plan is to get ahead with post titles and sketch out the outline before March. I’ve noted down photos I’d like to take in each season but also that I already have a tonne of beautiful photography that really fits my writing so I should use it!
Magical
I’m all about the depth of connection and I’ve already had such a synchronistic connect by writing on Substack. I’m confident putting energy here will serve me in lots of levels.
Achievable
It’s easy to throw out numbers that in the future can make you feel like you’re failing so instead of that I’m saying I’d like to increase both my paid and free subscribers at a steady rate.
My overall aim in my business is to work towards the 1000 true fans model. A model that takes time but moves me away from project to project working.
Realistic
Hugely realistic because of the note above and my will to do it plus the proven record I’ve got already and the fact that I REALLY like to spend time here!
Timely
Yes I think so. I’ve been writing on Substack since April. Brought friends and colleagues over and made lots of nice new connections too! It fits well with my content creation eco system and how I want to share my days.
So - tell me have you set any goals yet this year? I am working on goals across wellbeing, work and relationships this week!

I love your retake on SMART goals. The Seasonal and Magical aspects very much align with my creative practice so I’m definitely adopting them. I’m a huge fan of goal-setting as I have my own experience of chronic health issues and it can feel like you never get anything done. Goal-setting really helps with that. Maybe I’ll write a post on that soon x
I was surprised to see this post this morning as felt more spontaneous from you... and I loved it! And you can see others have! A successful experiment! Agree on seasonal totally. I’m really experimenting with goal setting this year - to come from time/ money/ output / feelings / where does the core focus come from etc xx
