Project Bloom is my 2023 project that explores wellbeing from the inside out!
I write seasonal updates on it. This one is (in part) for paid subscribers just because of the personal nature of my sharing.
One day in March…
Deep fluffy snow surrounds the car on our 8 minute drive to school encasing us in a timeless frozen space of comfort, love and nostalgia. We got as a family as I don’t like driving in it and Luna prefers me (Mum )to do the drop off…
Me (Mum) - “Did you know when I was at school, we walked in wellies on snow days and then changed into our slippers. I loved the contrast in feeling of cold to snuggly warm. It was a nice thing. I think I was around 8 in that memory”
Dave (Dad) - “Yeah I think I remember doing that too., probably a similar age”
(L aged 8) - “Wow that sounds nice. I wonder if we could do that at my school.”
Me - “Maybe we need an invitation first?”
(Luna aged 2) - “Slippers!”
L - “shall I ask?”
Ah comfort - the ever rewarding wellbeing tool. From cosy winter nights by the fire to a mug of something hot once everyone has left the house… a question of comfort was a journal prompt I gave myself this season because it turns out we can all find much more comfort!
The Buzzy Bee Bush that once was…
A note on bees and what they actually like
When we first bought our home 7 years ago, there was a spiky inconvenient bush planted between a wall and where we parked the car.
Certain months of the year (*) it was covered in hundreds of bees collecting nectar from its fruits.
When you opened the car door to let someone out onto the drive, the buzzing noise was incredible (and also for my son absolutely overwhelming).
The bee bush isn’t there any more. If we bought the house today we wouldn’t have taken it out. I don’t know what species it was, but we do have something similar in the front garden.
I’ve learnt that despite our best efforts of planting wildflowers and diversifying nectar sources for the bees, what they are actually short of in the UK is flowering trees, shrubs and bushes.
It’s actually flowering trees that is/ or should be the ‘major’ food source of the bee.
It was interesting to me to understand more about this in the context of wellbeing project - project bloom because I’ve learnt environment is everything when it comes to wellbeing!
